Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs)

ANPs are highly trained and skilled nurses that possess advanced and specialist clinical skills to lead and provide specialist care and first contact services in primary care.

The ANP role involves the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients who present in GP surgeries, Walk-in centres and Out of Hours services providing timely and effective care.

Their scope of practice includes but is not limited to:

  • Carrying out physical examinations

  • Use expert knowledge and clinical judgement for initial diagnosis

  • Refer patients for investigations or to an appropriate specialist where appropriate

  • Final diagnosis

  • Decide on and carry out treatment

  • Prescribing/dispensing medications

  • Ensure patient treatment and care based on best practice

  • Ensure the provision of continuity of care including follow-up visits

  • Assess and evaluate the effectiveness of patient treatment and care provided and make changes as required

  • Health promotion and advice

  • Social assessment
