Course Overview:
The Foundations of Advanced Practice is a series of four study days aiming to address the most common presenting complaints in Unscheduled Care.
In doing so the potential differential diagnoses will be explored and examination skills developed. In all cases diagnostic red flags and effective note taking will be covered.
The study days have been designed to use problem based learning, and crucially are based on presenting complaints rather than diagnosis. The distinction is vital as diagnosis is always a step within an Unscheduled Care consultation, it should never be the starting point.
Attending these study days will develop the thought processes and skills required for safe and effective diagnosis.
Course Content:
Day 1 - The Foundations of Advanced Practice
Day 2 - The Unwell Child
Day 3 - “There’s a lot of it about”
Day 4 - Heads, Backs and Abdomens
Day 1 - Examines the skills that form the basis of advanced clinical practice. A combination of lectures, discussion and problem based learning looks at the fundamental skills required to carry out effective consultations with patients.
Day 2 - The challenge for any practitioner is to recognise the seriously ill child and ensure appropriate treatment or referral. Day 2 is aimed at the non-paediatric specialist who needs to be able to manage unwell children in Unscheduled Care.
Day 3 - Many patients commonly present in Unscheduled Care with sore throats, shortness of breath, ear aches, coughs and chest pains. By addressing examination skills and problem based learning Day 3 aims to develop the essential skills and knowledge to safely care for this group of patients.
Day 4 - Addresses a range of common problems in Unscheduled Care including abdominal pain, bad backs, cystitis and minor head injuries. Day 4 will develop skills and knowledge about a range of pathologies through exploring the differential diagnoses that could lie behind presenting complaints.
